You are absolutely right: the correct wor...@martin: You are absolutely right: the correct word is Roma or Romani people and I have changed that in my post. I have done some reading regarding the Roma people and I even refer my readers to the English Kektura website where there is an excellent article about the historical and social background. I suggest you read it because it more or less reflects your - and my - opinion. Still, this is a hiking blog and as much as I understand and even agree with your analysis of the living situation of the Roma people it does not change the uneasy feeling I had when hiking there. And please do not exaggerate: I do not say that Romani are dangerous or the be avoided! "gipsies" as ...what the heck, christine!? "gipsies" as a problem? if you had done any research on the situation of minorities in general and especially romani people (which is the non- pejorative word for that ethnic group) in hungary, you would have come to know that their living conditions are result of societal failures like racism/ criminalization/ social stigma. by unthinkingly counting "gipsies" among your problems you don't exactly come across as someone who reflects on the social and societal facettes of the locations for your trips. this is at least a missed opportunity, as you, by nature of your means of travelling, have the time and space for experiencing and reflecting on such things as you happen uppon them, rather then just passing through and forgetting. at the worst, you contribute to the notion that romani are somehow "strange", "dangerous" and to be avoided, which is called antiziganism and hides subconsciously also in the minds of western europeans.martinnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5920557057591059630.post-35760685404548201942016-11-11T19:00:45.243+01:002016-11-11T19:00:45.243+01:00GREAT.
